If the contestant guessed right on a second chance (multiple choice at that point, and consisting of a maximum three choices), that team earned $25. The contestant who answered the last of the three questions correctly earned the right to take a taste test of a food item in the market correctly identifying the item earned that team a $50 bonus for the Big Sweep. "Snack Attack Movie Game" – Three questions about movies worth 10 seconds each were asked.A variant of this game required one member to describe three particular brand names for their partner to guess (with their logos shown on-screen), with 10 seconds awarded for each correct solution. If the clue-giver said one of the target words, the team forfeited their turn. The first letters of these words spelled out a brand or product name if the partner could guess it, the team received 30 seconds of Sweep time. One member was given a list of words and had 30 seconds to get their partner to say as many of them as possible. Each correct answer added 10 seconds to a team's time bank. Similar to the original version, all three teams started with a base time of 1:30. ![]() Some contestants on earlier episodes later appear in various tournaments. In the first season, the sweatshirt colors for teams 1, 2, and 3 were light blue, red, and yellow, respectively the sweatshirt colors of teams 1 and 2 were swapped in subsequent seasons. Beginning with the Big Sweep, the team members would put on sweatshirts of the same color, with each team ranked depending on how much time they earned in the question rounds. The game was played between three teams of two related individuals, such as a parent and child, spouses, siblings, or best friends, initially called to play by an object they were holding (in the studio audience from 1977 to 2000, backstage from 2000 onwards). The gameplay of the WBC version of Supermarket Sweep consisted of three segments: the question round, the Big Sweep, and the Bonus Sweep. Teams remained on the show until they were defeated or until they reached the winnings cap of $20,000. All teams kept every item they picked up, with the team with the highest total in groceries, bonus prizes and other items winning the right to return to the show and play in the next game. Bonus items worth $10–$100 were also spread throughout the store. ![]() Somehow King manages to remember exactly what it's like to be a child and a teen in the world of adults. An excellent book by Stephen King that I'd love to watch as a limited series at some point. I hope to see more of the IT universe come to life like it has through Jamie, our young protagonist (and Narrator) in New York in this book, or perhaps another child somewhere else. Whereas the story feels like it had an ending, it's clear the story isn't over. Without spoiling anything, there is something sinister in the story that connects this book to the IT universe in a subtle way. The story is very easy to read with short chapters - this combined with the captivating plot made the book hard to put down. ![]() Its a coming of age story for Jamie, its a touching-at-times story of different. As the novel frequently reminds the reader 'this is a horror story' however, it's not scary or gratuitous. Later is a short little novel that has an incredible amount packed into it. Here's why it can resolve the issues of his non-horror books. ![]() From the moment I picked this book up I was hooked. Stephen King's 62nd novel is titled Later, and is part of his Hard Case Crime series. ![]() ![]() Our manager phoned me, asked what to do? She knew it was the end of the world, panic set in, sure it was germ warfare.” They slammed against the building, fish blood and knocking themselves out. They were heavy with sardines unable to fly and lost in the dense fog as they came in from the sea attracted by our lights. “Struggling to the door, I was awed at the sight of hundreds of birds-all with the cry of a baby. That’s what happened to the sooty shearwaters.Įdna Messini, proprietor of the Venetian Court Motel on the beach at Capitola in 1961, wrote about the day the birds came: Now consider if a fourth input was introduced to the flock of boids-a piece of malware instead of a computational rule. This math basically plays out in nature each time a flock takes flight. Input 3, alignment: match the speed and direction of the boids around you.Input 2, separation: don’t run into your flock mates.Input 1, coherence: fly close, to the other boids. He called his flying creatures, “boids.” Three simple steering behaviors guide them: In 1986, programmer Craig Reynolds made a three-dimensional flocking algorithm, which played out in an early computer animation. The effect has been described as a chorus line, one leg kicking after another. That’s because flocking birds aren’t just aware of their immediate neighbor they’re focusing on the small group of birds around them-up to six or seven of them. Unlike a flock of geese where there’s an obvious leader (imagine a flying “V”), any bird in a flock cluster-like what starlings or shearwaters fly in-can move in any direction and the others will follow suit. Which is still sort of true, because have you ever seen starlings fly? Their murmurations are surreal. At the turn of the 20th century, learned scientists considered “natural telepathy” or a “group soul” as a flock’s compass. So, in order to understand what happened, first you need to know how a flock of birds-like thousands of shearwaters-fly and move together.Īncient Romans said the gods guided flocking birds. But if flocking birds were easily confused in low visibility, which is pretty normal up and down coastal California, then shearwater invasions would be as common as passing rain. Prevailing theories at the time supposed the sooty shearwaters got lost in the fog. And less than two years later, Hitchcock’s The Birds premiered. After all, the famed director was adapting a particular 1952 Daphne du Maurier story into a screenplay on the subject of killer birds. “The word of the bird invasion spread fast throughout the state,” notes the article, “and a phone call came to The Sentinel from mystery thriller producer Alfred Hitchcock from Hollywood.” He requested a copy of that day’s paper. This is the bird: Ardenna grisea, the sooty shearwater. In the Santa Cruz Sentinel, August 18, 1961, there is an account of thousands of birds raining down from the sky at 3 a.m.-crashing into homes and cars in Capitola and Pleasure Point, California just off Monterey Bay. ![]() ![]() In the essay "The World and the Jug", which is a response to Irving Howe's essay "Black Boys and Native Sons", which "pit Ellison and Baldwin against Wright and then", as Ellison would say, "gives Wright the better argument", Ellison makes a fuller statement about the position he held about his book in the larger canon of work by an American who happens to be of African ancestry. The narrator in Invisible Man says, "I am not complaining, nor am I protesting either", signaling the break from the normal protest novel that Ellison held about his work. Before Invisible Man, many (if not most) novels dealing with African Americans were written solely for social protest, notably, Native Son and Uncle Tom's Cabin. In his speech accepting the 1953 National Book Award, Ellison said that he considered the novel's chief significance to be its "experimental attitude". Ellison had published a section of the book in 1947, the famous "Battle Royal" scene, which had been shown to Cyril Connolly, the editor of Horizon magazine by Frank Taylor, one of Ellison's early supporters. Invisible Man was published as a whole in 1952. The book took five years to complete with one year off for what Ellison termed an "ill-conceived short novel". Malcolm Bradbury and Richard Ruland recognize a black existentialist vision with a " Kafka-like absurdity". Time magazine included the novel in its 100 Best English-language Novels from 1923 to 2005 list, calling it "the quintessential American picaresque of the 20th century", rather than a "race novel, or even a bildungsroman". In 1998, the Modern Library ranked Invisible Man 19th on its list of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century.
